| Sebastian Matta was born in Santiago in Chile in 1911. At the age of 22 he graduated in Chile in architecture and then set off for France. In 1934 he began working with Le Corbusier and also met Garcia Lorca, and over the next two years also began to mix with the likes of Aalto, Gropius, Moholy-Nagy and Magritte. In 1937 it was Dalì who was to send him to Breton who immediately bought one of his first pictures. This is the period which was to give birth to his first psychological morphologies, visual equivalances for the many different states of mind with which he experimented on canvas in an automatism and experimentation into different radical techniques which was to build the language of surrealism. | He took Marcel Duchamp s' advice and set off for New York with Tanguy and soon became a spokesman for surrealism in America. There he also met regularly with Baziotes, Pollock, Gorky and other young painters who were to become key voices in the future New York school of painters. His multifaceted activities meant that, Matta invoked a galactic vision of both infinity and the mystery of humanity itself. | ![]() |
